Stranger Things Have Happened ...

On 16 August it was Gary’s late father’s birthday. The windows were open and as usual the car was parked outside the house with Gary’s van parked opposite. Bec and I heard a strange chirping noise and both looked outside to see a cockatiel sitting on his van! Now I don’t know if you know but his father was an avid bird lover and kept an aviary with lovebirds etc. Anyway, we went outside to get some pictures of it as it’s so unusual to see one of these outside flying free – it had obviously escaped from somewhere. As soon as it saw us it flew to our car – of all the cars in the street, it went for ours and Gary’s van. Gary said that we needed to get it inside as there is a huge hawk around and would have it for its supper without blinking. It flew from the car to the wall, to the car, to the van again. Then as soon as Gary stepped outside it went straight to his shoulder and was happily sitting there for ages whilst we wondered what to do – weird huh? Anyway, he just walked into the house with it on his shoulder and it flew and sat on one of the units and happily started preening. There was no way did I want it – Bec was actually in the kitchen... with my coat on... with the hood up ... too terrified to come out. Hmmm ...

Gary went out to look for anyone who looked like they had lost a bird and wandered off down the street. He asked a couple of neighbours who pointed him in the direction of someone who could help. In the meantime the bird had now flown onto Bec’s picture over the mantelpiece and was precariously perched there having another preen and screeching happily to himself. The man lent him a cage and a net and Gary just scooped him up, put him in the cage and walked back to the fella’s house. When he came back he said that if his father had been alive and had known about it, he would have been like “Secret Squirrel!” The blinds would have been closed and the bird would have been moved to his aviary in the dead of night! I don’t know if anyone has claimed it but I knew it went to someone who at least was well known in the area for having birds and knew how to look after it so at least that was a load off. Strange it was his birthday when it appeared though don’t you think?
